Availability of Coronavirus medicine for treatment: Coronavirus, now termed as COVID-19, is spreading fast to many countries, endangering thousands of lives. The pandemic has lead to the development of novel coronavirus vaccines across the biotech industry. Pharmaceutical companies and research organisations such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), US are working for this development.
According to Xu Nanping, China’s vice-minister of science and technology, the first COVID-19 vaccine in China is expected to be ready for clinical trials by the end of April. Inovio Pharmaceuticals plans to begin clinical trials on a coronavirus vaccine in April this year.
Chloroquine – Treatment for Coronavirus?
Chloroquine has been around for decades. It is used to prevent and treat malaria. It is also on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines, the medicines needed in a health system that are considered to be the safest and most effective.
President Trump, at his daily press briefing, said, “We’re going to be able to make Chloroquine available almost immediately. And that’s where the FDA has been so great. They’ve gone through the approval process – it’s been approved.” Although the FDA confirmed, it has not been approved for treating those infected with the Covid-19 coronavirus. FDA is the body in charge of licensing medicines in America.
“There are no FDA-approved therapeutics or drugs to treat, cure or prevent Covid-19.” they further added.
However, the FDA does say that studies are underway to see if chloroquine can be useful in the treatment of Covid-19. It also says it has been directed by The President to set up a large clinical trial to investigate the drug.
At a later briefing, The President rephrased and said chloroquine is approved for “compassionate use.” Doctors are allowed to give such drugs to a patient in a life-threatening condition even when the government does not pass it. Doctors can prescribe chloroquine in these circumstances, as it’s a registered drug.
